Michael Turner, R.I.P.

I have always loved the slick, hi-glossiness of Image Comics, but what led me to them was TopCow. TopCow's main title was "Witchblade", police woman/badass heroine with an ancient entity she's hosting. TopCow was enveloped into Image, but the title really didn't change much.

One of the best cover artists behind Witchblade's rise was Michael Turner, fantastic artist and from what I could tell all around nice guy (met at a San Diego Con, have autographs and whole fan geek artifacts to prove it). I've just read he died of cancer this weekend. At 37.

At some point this will stop being a eulogy blog, but lately, Christ, heroes and generally respected people are dropping in droves. This must be a tip-off of middle age, all the things you know slowly dying off.

To lighten up the mood, hopefully with no disrespect to Turner- saw "Hancock" this 4th of July holiday. Any positive hype you've heard is deserved. The only possible critique I have is that Theron is pretty unnecessary in the film ( good actress, just no comedic gift), but passable and doesn't doesn't really detract overall.

Stop Taking the comics, please...

Another legend, George Carlin, passed this week. I was lucky enough to see him perform in Vegas about 10 or so years ago. He was manic, bitter, and angry- and viciously funny. Some 'celebrity deaths' hit harder than others.

For those not aware, HBO is running programming the next 2 nights and all weekend of his catalogue to honour him. I just picked up the channel for the month to log some serious DVR time.

In tribute:

Shit! Piss! Fuck! Cunt! Cocksucker! Motherfucker! Tits!

So Appropriate!

I live in the Phoenix Metro area, and I just have to share the most awesome local commentary ever.

"Douche at the Scottsdale Bars".

You're welcome.

As someone special recently said to me...

Say Goodnight

Hillary is hanging up her hat tomorrow, which makes me sad on several levels.

No, I don't think she should shoulder on and 'create further division' within the Democratic Party, that is not the origin of my sadness.

What has me down is just how screwed up the whole gender issue is, even now, even here, in the grand ol' US of A. Oh, I know, "But Tamsen, things are better there than they are in so many other countries. Women have even been able to vote for the last 80 years!". Yes, all true- and maybe makes things worse.

This is the top of the mountaintop, yet it has not changed that a man garners more respect than a woman, even if saying the same words. It has not changed that a strong tone from a man is considered, well, strong- commanding, a mark of leadership- and from a woman the same ball-busting and shrill. What has changed is that even women are in on the game. Instead of finding articles out in the great World Wide Web of Hillary's fortitude, her tirelessness, her political skills (hate her or not, she didn't just float on a giggle to the running), I see two sorts of vicious cattiness couched in a guise of feminism. The first is that she dared to mention sex had anything to do with how the media portrayed her (because, really, the media IS running the show, or Obama would not be on top right now as the Manchurian Candidate). The second is that she didn't use that card enough- that she's cut her hair short, that she wears pantsuits, that this is obvious male pandering and she is setting the movement back.

Well. A big "fuck you" to you, girls, because if anything was detrimental to how women are regarded, it was the stereotypical bitch-biting that didn't concentrate on any of the actual, you know, campaign issues, and instead focused on the color of Hil's jackets and whether her Slight Tearing Up was going to screw up her message.

I don't believe in a movement. I did believe in progress. Now I believe more in John Lennon nailing it, only the perpetrators are gaining size. The so-called Feminists are now like those women who insist that their daughters be circumcised because they were circumcised themselves, and the men just shrug and walk away with a, "well, if they don't care about it, what can I do" attitude- rightly so.

I can't imagine how screwed up this next generation of girls are going to be in their mid-thirties, when they are raised that being like Paris Hilton or her crew is something attainable and positive to aspire to (have ya seen the Bratz dolls? seriously?), but to be like Hillary Clinton, with all her degrees, poise, and tireless will, is to be a demon.

"It's Hedley..."

A comic great has passed, Harvey Korman.

In tribute, a clip from "Blazing Saddles".

Best.

I'm sorry.

I just couldn't help myself.

A New Dawn...

I know I haven't been posting very much (great way to lose daily readership, by the way!), but my notebook was getting buggier and buggier trying to use Typepad (which I love, but pages were slow to load on the laptop) so I kept away.

In the interest of improving this state of affairs, I finally did it; I got a Mac (let's hear it for credit). It's beautiful, like a sleek jaguar (or snake, according to my friend Bob) perched on my desk...love love love.

However, confusing to someone raised from cradle (almost literally, father worked for IBM from the '60's to the '90's) on a PC, the simplest things are taking me a great deal of time to figure out (accidentally) how to do. Like 'cut/copy/paste' was an adventure...not sure if proper way, but learned I can highlight and drag where I need, or highlight and drag to desktop and can drag it wherever as needed; useful stuff, but not immediately recognized.

I bought the base model iMac (still have the notebook to lug if I wanna), and so far, it's plenty...and the built in video/camera feature with the jillion effects? Oh yeah...changed my social media profile pix for 1st time since November.

Rather than intending this to be an apology- I was hoping that any of you Apple gurus might share some tips with someone newly initiated. I have had the iPhone since day 1, so that exposure has been really helpful- but I know there are many shortcuts, maneuvers, that people  take for granted that I may never learn unless some kind soul or two opens up. This will likely lead to a Google stroll, but some things are just so much nicer in person.

Just like that.

In case you've been keeping notes...

Welsh Darth Vader Dodges Jail.

A Welsh man, Arwel Wynn Hughes, from Holyhead has avoided jail for attacking two would-be Jedis with a crutch while disguised as Darth Vader.

Hughes, whose attack was captured on video, was sentenced to two months in prison suspended for 12 months.

Two keen Welsh Jedis were filming themselves having a pretend light sabre fight in their garden. Hughes leapt over a low garden wall with a binbag round his shoulders while wielding a crutch and shouting "Darth Vader".

You really must watch the video clip provided at the end of the article. Life doesn't get much funnier than this.
