Not a law?

Did you know that it is illegal to prevent (within the States) a U.S. citizen from boarding an airplane if they don't have  Gov't issued identification?

Interesting read. Not sure I'd ever have the balls to try it- and just as big a hassle for me as everyone else if I did- but vaguely gratifying in some way that I could.

The airlines could get around this simply by stating it's their service policy and they wont serve you unless you have gov id.

IMHO, there's nothing inherently wrong with an ID check. What is wrong is the assumption that because you have an ID check, you're (the airline) indemnified from a terrorist attack.

ID Checks won't stop terrorists. But they will stop lawsuits, because the airline was following the TSA guidelines.
