The Plight of the Hawaiian People...
is finally getting the attention it deserves.
I jest- but it does give pause to consider on the mainland, indigenous people were given (token) sovereignty. 130 years later, however, is there really a movement for the same? Is it worthwhile?
I suppose it's a matter of pride, either way.

This gives a little of the history: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/hawaii/program.html
It was disgraceful the way Queen Lili'uokalani was treated, the Hawaiian royal possessions ending up in the homes of wealthy sugar industry owners, etc.
Some of the treasures were recently bought up and collected as an attempt to restore some of the history.
I don't know if you've ever seen "Diamond Head" with Charlton Heston, but it gave a modern perspective of the clash between the Hawaiian people and the Hapa Haoles- non Hawaiians. Greed was a factor in the attempted destruction of the Hawaiian natives just as it was with the Native Americans on the continent.
