Michael Turner, R.I.P.

I have always loved the slick, hi-glossiness of Image Comics, but what led me to them was TopCow. TopCow's main title was "Witchblade", police woman/badass heroine with an ancient entity she's hosting. TopCow was enveloped into Image, but the title really didn't change much.

One of the best cover artists behind Witchblade's rise was Michael Turner, fantastic artist and from what I could tell all around nice guy (met at a San Diego Con, have autographs and whole fan geek artifacts to prove it). I've just read he died of cancer this weekend. At 37.

At some point this will stop being a eulogy blog, but lately, Christ, heroes and generally respected people are dropping in droves. This must be a tip-off of middle age, all the things you know slowly dying off.

To lighten up the mood, hopefully with no disrespect to Turner- saw "Hancock" this 4th of July holiday. Any positive hype you've heard is deserved. The only possible critique I have is that Theron is pretty unnecessary in the film ( good actress, just no comedic gift), but passable and doesn't doesn't really detract overall.

As someone special recently said to me...

Said the lugubrious Mr. Pot...

THE Archbishop of Canterbury has said that the United States wields its power in a way that is worse than Britain during its imperial heyday.

Rowan Williams claimed that America’s attempt to intervene overseas by “clearing the decks” with a “quick burst of violent action” had led to “the worst of all worlds”.

In a wide-ranging interview with a British Muslim magazine, the Anglican leader linked criticism of the United States to one of his most pessimistic declarations about the state of western civilisation.

He said the crisis was caused not just by America’s actions but also by its misguided sense of its own mission. He poured scorn on the “chosen nation myth of America, meaning that what happens in America is very much at the heart of God’s purpose for humanity”.

More {from Digg]. In other news, there's still an Archbishop of Canterbury. All my Chaucer references just got an update.

More rats jumping ship- McClellan completely turns on his handlers. And Clinton gets impeached for getting head. Slightly overweight, frumpily-dressed head at that. Simply no discernable logic lets this President get away with the massive corruption he's initiated and allowed.

To better days...

Intriguing ebook- "The History Of Nazi Occultism", by Alan Baker. Choppy reading, but subject matter holds interest insofar as the mythical elements (the spear of destiny?).

Nice sentiments...when was the last time someone fell in love with Your extraordinary self? Or the last time you caught a spark from a seemingly innocuous conversation that about knocked you out?

Perhaps there is a case where Zen is not Zen when Zen state is manipulated and forced into macabre stillness. Okay, okay, this predates Zen- I know the sect I was raised in was a bit too "me" to fall in with this sort of ritual.

Lastly, in case you've been hiding out from all the brilliant webcomix out there, climb out from your luddite rock to read this one, at least.

Time for a little levity...

Need help on deciding what candidates speak to your views (we all know that changes somewhat once in office- see Democratic Congress buckling)? This site may be just up your alley. If you want to skip some wading, choose your views from this dropdown list and it will correlate against the 2decide site and spit back the results.

For me, Clinton had the most matches. Interesting.

Latest 'Get Your War On' goodness. Bet he never figured on 5 years worth of material. As Bob would say, "Jihadsploitation!".

"If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention."

I keep reading about the 'poor' Lebanese people under siege, the awfulness. And it is. It truly is. Reading about an eight year old boy bleeding from the eyes makes one soulsick.

But what's really terrible is when civilians have to forfeit lives for their government's mania- but let's not forget where the blame lies. Israel offered pretty reasonable terms, backing off the original demand for Hezbollah to be kicked out, and yet the pleas for the U.N./U.S. and others to 'make the bad men go away' continue as if those terms were never given for peace.

It's a crummy deal. We've been (the United States) in some gruesome, loathsome even, situations since the Iraq conflict began. There have not been model citizens across the board. What would be the citizen situation be in America if we bordered Iraq, or was within missile distance?

No Good or Bad, White hats vs. Black hats, can be found here. The whole Middle East is like one big free-for-all in upping each other in essential wrongness. You support the one that's slightly less grey-tinged, you take into account decades of history to lend heft and weight to your decision-

And you hope you are right. More right, anyway.

Just 2 things today-

1. A strip I'm sure someone's being sued over, but it's a superb use of an old meme, so here ya go [from fark, natch]:

9dbe9e5a200bc4d4ae4025daf65c4cc9_1

2. Bush vetoes Stem cell research.

Um...what was the point? He said he'd veto it, everyone knew he was going to, and yet it played through the process like it was to be some Hail Mary pass that could make it. Though a great political move by Dems (how often can you say that, huh?), I reckon. We saw both parties in support of it, and the polls- those bastions of perfect inaccuracies- show the 'American People' are in support of it to the tune of 70%.

It was one thing when the GOP wasn't playing to the Democrats, that's expected- now we get GOP disenfranchisement within its ranks. Add to that general unease at the loss of hawkishness and it hopefully means November will be a good month.

It's a bit backwards, isn't it...the people we probably should be at war with we're frenetically diplomatic to. Then those where diplomacy just might have been effective with, we introduce a civil war to.

Okay I lied- Three things-

3. The wailing woman in the head scarf.

Every morning. During the day when I steal a moment at lunch to check a news feed. After work. On weekends. Every hour, there is a new picture of her. Sometimes she is in Iraq, lately she makes it to Lebanon, or Israel. Sometimes she is old, but more often quite young. She has lost her brother. Her husband. Her parents. Worst of all, her sons and daughters. Her pain bleeds through the screen and dampens your cheeks.

I long for the day when the woman can be seen smiling. I fear that hour is many, many years away, and we'll be so used to her tears we will no longer see her.

Cast your stones.

Did I mention it's good to be back?? Can't say that I much enjoyed the 'mistake by the Lake' (although, I now can completely empathize with the moniker). All I can say is, I'm glad that wasn't my wedding that was outside in 37 degrees off of Lake Erie (even if I did have to suffer through along with the rest)- a lot of stress, varied results- but much booze, so in hindsight could have been much worse. And a couple that loves each other very much, so in the end, suppose that's what it's all about.

But think they could have loved one another just as much indoors?!

Heh.
