A day that will live...

If I ever decide to get married again (many, many years from now), someone make me do this first.

Then we'll know it's a real match, because no way would I jump off a mountain without anything to hang onto otherwise.

Sigh.

How about them Springboks?

I watched my first Rugby game today- at least, the first one where I was with others into it and knowledgable of the rules. It was a most enjoyable day of smoked meats, beer, and much shouting and leaping about (okay, I neither shouted nor leapt, but supported those who did). I was in a houseful of RSA fans, so happy their team took the game. I wouldn't say I totally understand the rules yet (like the scrum...is there a ball to start? why the phalanx if not? someone is holding the ball, why is there still wrestling and swaying?), but I did learn this- rugby players can be cute.

Seriously, Beckham who?

On an unrelated note, saw "30 Days of Night" this evening. It wasn't bad, but an awful lot like "28 Days Later". The base concept is excellent- small Alaskan town, time of year where a month of no sun, so most of town moves elsewhere for that time. Enter in the Vamps, who intend to clean-up. My issue is- the Vampires are not intelligent. At best they are alien-like, at worst, so primal as to be devoid of higher reason. What makes the myths about these guys cool is that they are intelligent, cultured, and those that aren't are basically sewer rats in the pecking order. Taking that away in favor of these strangely affected, hissing monsters basically ensures the film doesn't work.

Surprisingly, a movie I saw yesterday did work, and worked well- "The Heartbreak Kid" with Ben Stiller. I think he's great, but there was a definitive period of oversaturation (with less than stellar efforts) so have avoided for awhile. He does play the same angsty, sarcastic, bitter guy we've seen before, but it's not too overdone and really just a very funny film. With an ending that one can only imagine was one of those, "Hey, you know what we should do that would be really funny?" conversations, that should honestly have been an outtake instead.

Today I didn't even have to use my a.k....

Jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane is one thing, but without a parachute is absolutely certifiable. [source: the prolific growabrain]

Intriguing ebook- "The History Of Nazi Occultism", by Alan Baker. Choppy reading, but subject matter holds interest insofar as the mythical elements (the spear of destiny?).
